Ephedrine is an extremely old medication that has been used for a host of purposes. For decades it has been used as a decongestant, in the treatment of hypotension (low blood pressure) and is well-known for its thermogenic and appetite suppressing effects. Ephedrine also represents one of the most controversial medications to ever exist, especially in the United States.
This very simple compound has come under an enormous amount of legal scrutiny throughout the years. The compound has been banned by the U.S. government, reinstated as a legal medication, and seen countless and ever changing regulations that have often left many very confused. Some have speculated that in time Ephedrine may be listed as a controlled substance, and due to the ever and constantly changing law it is possible. However, while possible it is unlikely, as Ephedrine is found in numerous over the counter medications. Unfortunately, due to many of these over the counter medications existing, this creates an easy way to manufacture methamphetamines, which is considered a massive problem by the U.S. government. While the never ending war on drugs continues to overwhelm a large portion of our national budget, a controlled label placed on Ephedrine could potentially damage the pharmaceutical market. The final outcome is unpredictable, but as it stands this is a very popular thermogenic among performance athletes and an integral part of the pharmaceutical community.
*Ephedrine Functions & Traits:
Ephedrine Hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic from the same family as AlbuterolSulfate and Clenbuterol Hydrochloride. However, unlike Clenbuterol, which is a beta-2 agonist, Ephedrine is an alpha and beta adrenergic agonist. As a result, Ephedrine will promote a significant release of norepinephrine, which is strikingly similar to adrenaline. Specifically, norepinephrine is a powerful endogenous alpha agonist.
When Ephedrine is administered, it greatly stimulates the central nervous system while providing a tremendously powerful stimulating effect. The resulting effect results in an increase in the body’s core temperature and an ensuing increased metabolic rate, but it does not end there. The total action will result in more free fatty acids being produced due to a now enhanced breakdown of triglycerides in the adipose tissue resulting in body fat loss. In short, the metabolic rate is enhanced, more energy is burned and fat loss is enhanced. Burning more energy is synonymous with fat loss so as long as the total amount of energy burned puts energy levels in a deficit.
The enhancements that Ephedrine provides have also been linked to increasing the anabolic effectiveness of anabolic steroids. While possible, it is very difficult to determine how great this effect is. However, we can say with confidence any enhancement of anabolic activity will be mild at best.
Ephedrine is also well known for being a strong appetite suppressant; in fact, it’s one of the best suppressants on earth. This is largely due to the compound decreasing gastric emptying. Due to this property, Ephedrine has appeared as a primary ingredient in numerous over the counter diet pills for decades.
Then we’re left with the final traits of Ephedrine, which are largely associated with medicinal treatment. Ephedrine is commonly found in many decongestants but is more aptly labeled as a bronchodilator. The compound will ease restrictions on the air passageways thereby improving breathing. For this purpose, it has been used to treat asthma, bronchitis and even common ailments that cause an obstruction in breathing. In a clinical setting, Ephedrine has also been used to treat hypotension resulting from anesthesia.
*Effects of Ephedrine:
As a bronchodilator, the effects of Ephedrine are very straightforward. Breathing is hindered, which could be caused by numerous varying factors. When Ephedrine is administered the air passageways are expanded and improved breathing ensues. Most have experienced breathing difficulties at one time or another, and compounds like Ephedrine can provide a lot of welcomed relief.
Then we have the effects of Ephedrine as a thermogenic, which is one of its most common purposes of use. The metabolism is stimulated; it now burns stronger, and as a result, fat as burned at an accelerated rate. Many athletes find Ephedrine to be very beneficial when trying to lose stubborn body fat that is often hard to get rid of. However, contrary to the belief of many, the use of Ephedrine will not permit you to forgo dieting. You must still burn more calories than you consume if you’re going to lose body fat. Fortunately, Ephedrine will enable you to burn these calories at a higher rate. In theory, this means you could actually reduce your calories less with Ephedrine than without, but this isn’t the best path to follow. A solid plan is dieting just as you would without the compound and by enhancing the metabolism with Ephedrine you now take what you’re already doing right but you’re now able to do it a little better.
As an appetite suppressant, Ephedrine can be useful and will generally appear in diet pills that also contain other ingredients. The effects of Ephedrine in this category are simple; you no longer desire to eat as much. For the athlete, this can sometimes be a problem and downside of use. Even if you’re dieting you still have to consume enough food, and starving yourself even when trying to lose weight is detrimental in the long term. Starving yourself in the long term will hinder the effectiveness and power of your metabolism. For those who have little to no appetite control, a period of appetite suppression may be warranted until they can get things under control, but only short term. The individual will need to teach himself how to eat properly during this time as a healthy diet that is constant will produce a stronger metabolism and a healthier individual in the long run.
*Side Effects of Ephedrine:
There are several possible side effects of Ephedrine; in fact, by no means can we call it an extremely side effect friendly medication. It can be safely used, but caution as well as responsible use is advised. The primary side effects of Ephedrine will largely surround its stimulating nature and will be very similar to Albuterol and Clenbuterol. The primary side effects of Ephedrine include:
- Shaky Hands
- Insomnia (often severe)
- Rapid Heartbeat
- A General Uneasy Feeling
In most cases, as the body adapts to the compound such effects will lessen; however, for some they may be so intense in the early stages that it inhibits them from using Ephedrine. If this occurs, the individual should discontinue use and let the compound clear his system. From this stage, he could try Ephedrine again, but this time begin with a lower starting dose and take a little more time to let his body accustom.
Most commonly Ephedrine is used to enhance fat loss excluding its use in medications that contain the compound as a decongestant. In order to facilitate fat loss, standard Ephedrine doses will normally fall in the 25-50mg ranges and be administered 2-3 times per day. In order to enhance the total effects, many will implement what is known as an ECA stack – Ephedrine, Caffeine and Aspirin. The total amount of caffeine will normally fall in the 100-200mg ranges with Aspirin at 100-300mg. You will find the ECA stack to be far more effective than Ephedrine alone.
Total Ephedrine use has for many years been debated with many following a two week on two week off protocol. Others may stretch the total use out to 3 weeks, but in either case, there is one primary factor revolving around success. With use the individual’s body temperature will increase approximately one to two degrees. Once the body’s temperature has dropped, use should be discontinued as the body has adapted. If for any reason the body’s temperature hasn’t decreased by this stage use should still be discontinued for at least two weeks in order to ensure you protect your health. A two week break at minimum is advised with a four week break being far safer.
Beyond fat loss use, some athletes enjoy using Ephedrine strictly for its stimulating effects. A common point of use is to simply administer the compound a few days leading up to the competition including the day of competition. The same dosing protocol used for fat loss will apply here. Then we’re left with Ephedrine as an appetite suppressant. Normally this will simply be a low dose of the compound applied to a multiple ingredient over the counter diet pill. However, alone, such as the fat loss administration plan discussed above, the individual will notice notable appetite suppression.
